The Republic of Liberia is a small country located in Western Africa. Liberia currently celebrates 11 national holidays each year. All national holidays are regulated under the Labour Practice Laws Section 18. These laws provide employees throughout the country with a day off from work for all nationally recognised holidays. Under this law, all holidays which occur on a Sunday are moved to the following Monday for observance.
Liberia has undergone significant political strife over the last few decades and many of the government documents relating to public holidays are inaccessible at this time. However, it is known that government employees are entitled to a paid day off for all public holidays. It is believed that employees of private businesses are only guaranteed paid holidays if it is part of their employment contract.
The President of Liberia holds the right to declare additional holidays throughout the year by official proclamation. The current president often uses this right and has, on average, declared at least three additional holidays each year over the last several years. Many of these holidays are only announced through proclamation a day or two before the event. Regardless of time frame, employers are required to acknowledge public holidays announce by the government.
Cultural, Religious, and Provincial Celebrations
Liberia has a very diverse population with over 80 percent of the population identifying with a specific tribe or cultural group that is tied to the African continent. Each of these tribes has their own religious beliefs and special holidays that are associated with these beliefs.
The government of Liberia acknowledges that these cultures celebrate these events but does not recognise the events as a public holiday. Employers are not required to provide days off from work for these celebrations.
A large majority of the population of Liberia live in rural areas. Many of these areas have very specific holidays that are observed only in these provinces. The government of Liberia does not acknowledge these events as public holidays.
