The Federal Republic of Somalia is a country located on the horn of Africa. Although officially Somalia is a single country, there is significant political turmoil within the country and part of the northern region classifies it as a separate state known as Somaliland. Somaliland acknowledges many of the same holidays as Somalia, but may celebrate them on different days based on their religious calendars.
A majority of the holidays celebrated in Somalia are based on the Muslim faith. Most of these holidays are based on the lunar cycle and may fall on different days each year. It is understood that the Somalian government uses the Arithmetical Islamic Calendar, however they may also use the dates that are given from Mecca for these dates.
At this time, the Labour of Laws of Somalia are not used. These laws were first established in 1962, but there have been at least four different government structures in power since that time. In 2006, the current Somalian government declared Sharia law throughout the country and it is unknown how this impacts businesses and labour laws.
According to Muslim tradition, weekends are on Thursday and Friday in Somalia. While records show that holidays that fall on one of these dates are often moved to the next working day for celebration, there are currently no laws stipulating that this must be done.
It is unknown if employers are required to pay employees for paid holidays, but it is assumed that they are required to offer a day off on those dates. This is especially true on Muslim holidays.
There is a very small portion of the Somali population in the southern region of the country that does not practice the Muslim faith. These tribes have very distinct holidays and celebrations, many of which are based on the beliefs of the continent. Under Sharia law, the government does not recognise the existence of these celebrations.
